R @ Sea: Learn to Code
Immersive Workshop in R for Ecological Modeling

This 3-day workshop is ideal for students and researchers looking to learn R programming quickly in an immersive, hands-on setting. Live and learn aboard the RV Garvin for 3 days during which you will rotate through small group sessions introducing you to critical R skills and break sessions exploring beautiful South Florida habitats from mangroves to coral reefs.

This style of learning is ideal for mastering complex skills, giving participants plenty of time to process information, practice new techniques, and ask questions. Students are encouraged to bring their own data sets and will have opportunities to work on their own projects and troubleshoot with the instructor.

This course is ideal for both young and established biologists interested in becoming proficient in R programming and ecological modelling techniques, and is suitable for both beginner and intermediate R users.

The course consists of three modules:

1. Introduction to R and R Studio
  • getting started with R and R Studio
  • programming basics
2. Managing, Exploring and Visualizing Data in R
  • data management and best practices
  • {dplyr} for manipulating and summarizing data
  • {ggplot2} for visualizing data
3. Modelling Ecological Data
  • simple non-parametric statistics
  • generalized linear models
  • mixed effect models
  • diagnostics and model selection

Each module includes code-along tutorials where students actively participate in writing and executing code, and co-working sessions designed to allow students to explore coding and statistics in R in a cooperative group environment with opportunities for one-on-one discussions with the instructor.

Time will also be allotted for open group discussions about alternate modelling or analytical techniques, such as machine learning, zero inflated models, occupancy and detectability models, and developing resampling algorithms.

About the Instructor
Danielle Quinn is a PhD student at Memorial University in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada. She has 8 years of experience with data management, R, and statistical analyses across a variety of conservation and management projects involving fish, mammals, marine invertebrates, insects, and plants. Danielle has developed and delivered several R courses, including “Modelling Biological and Ecological Data in R” at Rhodes University in Grahamstown, South Africa (2015), and “Data Wrangling, Visualization, and Modelling in R and R Studio” at University of Maine (2016), as well as instructing Software Carpentry courses at Acadia University, Memorial University, and University of West Virginia (2015 - 2018), covering topics including Unix Shell, Git/GitHib, R, and Python. She is excited to join the Field School team again in September!

Two options are available:

$799 per person

Includes: Workshop and activities, transportation once participants arrive at the RV Garvin, and all housing and meals for the duration of the course.
